Well, it points to the hybrid condition of kiwi
cultural output, something fairly well acknowledged
among Maori practitioners, or at least robustly
discussed. NZ-Euro practitioners who work within
Western parameters seem to overlook this, but maybe
this is happening less.
Clearly Maori stories on film is a hybridised version
of Maori reality (OWW was shot with a filmic language
that landed Tamahori work in LA), and many of NZ's
more well known artists - like Len Lye, Colin McCahon
and Rita Angus created work with strong Maori or
Polynesian influences. If visitors to Te Papa go to
the highest point overlooking the sea - the Marae -
they will an extraordinary artefact of cultural
hybridity - the curvilinear, multi coloured MDF vision
of Cliff Whiting. Ralph Hotere is renowned for works
supposedly within the idiom of Western abstraction,
but which clearly mix Western and Maori intimately.
Hybridity has also been acknowledged by artists such
as Michael Parekowhai.
